Jopen Gerstebier

Jopen B.V.

Especially for the Monument days and the Jopen Festival Jopen is going to make a Gerstebier, beer made of barley. This beertype was made by breweries which still exsisted early 1900, the period of the great breakthrough of pilsner beer.

Since the brewers had to deal with the long period of fermentation to make Pils, this was a way to big investment for many of them. To work with bottom-fermentation they needed a ice celler or a cooling machine. As a respons on the trend of pilsner they came with a top-fermented beer that was also golden and bitter to give the public an alternative. In Haarlem this beer was also brewed by the operational breweries in the early 1900 s.

The Jopen Gerstebier is a golden beer with a volume of alcohol of 4,5%. Just like Pilsner in those days Jopen Gerstebier will be fairly bitter. We tend to give it a sipping character, thats why it has a lower alcohol volume (which was alsoquite commonin the early 1900 s). With the little hop in the aste it sure will be a beer full of character.
